Frequently Asked Questions

Do you direct bill?

Yes, our office direct bills most insurance plans along with WCB and Motor Vehicle Accidents.

What conditions do chiropractors treat?

Chiropractors are experts trained in the neuromusculoskeletal system. They diagnose and treat disorders of the spine including other body joints by adjusting the spinal column or through other corrective manipulation. Chiropractors provide conservative management of neuromusculoskeletal disorders including, but not limited to, back, neck and head pain (over 90 percent of conditions treated). They also advise patients on corrective exercises, lifestyle, and nutrition.

Is it bad to “crack” your neck or back?

The desire to "crack" or "pop" your neck or back is often caused by jamming of the joints of the spine. This jamming in one part of the spine can cause other parts of the spine to compensate by moving too much and popping or clicking. It is for this reason that chiropractors are trained to assess the structure and functions of the spine to determine which parts are not moving, and which parts are. We then adjust the parts that aren’t moving so you can get back to your daily movements with ease.

What type of problems do you treat?

Chiropractors typically treat disorders of the neuromusculoskeletal system (nerves, muscles, & joints). Some examples of areas that we treat at St. Albert Chiropractic include: Headaches, neck pain, shoulder pain, tennis elbow, golfer's elbow, nerve entrapments, carpal tunnel syndrome, rib complaints, low back pain, sciatica, hip, knee, foot, and ankle joint complaints.

Is chiropractic covered by AHC or my insurance plan?

Chiropractic is no longer covered by AHC. However, most insurance carriers do cover chiropractic care. Check with your health insurance plan or employer to find out if you are covered. We direct bill to most Insurance companies, and provided receipts for reimbursement for those that do not.

Are Neck Adjustments safe?

Yes, they are. Millions of neck adjustments are performed safely and effectively every year in Canada. Neck adjustment is performed within the normal turning range of the head - there is less movement than it takes to look over your shoulder.

If I go to see a chiropractor, will I be expected to keep going?

That's entirely up to you. Some people only want to be treated for a specific pain or illness, and when the symptoms disappear they stop going. Others use chiropractic care to fully correct the underlying cause of the symptoms and to remain to feel well. Similar to dentistry, chiropractic care can be used to prevent new problems from arising or maintain the progress you have already made. Through regular maintenance and following the at-home care plan we provide, pain can be managed. However, we fully support your choice regarding frequency and longevity of our time together.

What results can I expect from treatment?

That depends on your condition. How long you have had the problem, your age, and the degree of your disability all affect the length of your treatment. We help determine the extent of treatment recommended, and how long you can expect it to last. As always, following the treatment plan and any daily stretches/at-home care that we recommend will ensure you recieve the maximal results in the quickest amount of time.

How is the chiropractic adjustment performed?

The chiropractic adjustment is a manual procedure that utilizes the highly refined skills developed during four intensive years of chiropractic education. The chiropractor typically uses his/her hands to manipulate the joints of the body, particularly the spine, to reduce pain, and restore or enhance joint function.

Is a chiropractic adjustment a safe procedure?

Chiropractic adjustment or manipulation is a drug-free, non-invasive approach to common musculoskeletal conditions such as headache, and neck and back pain. As such, it is a low-risk therapy. Complications arising from adjustment are rare.

Is chiropractic treatment appropriate for children?

Yes, children may benefit from chiropractic care. Children are very physically active and experience many types of falls and blow from activities of daily living as well as from participating in sports. Injuries such as these may cause many symptoms including back and neck pain, stiffness, soreness or discomfort. Chiropractic care is always adapted to the individual patient. It is a highly skilled treatment, and in the case of children, very gentle.

What is the difference between physicians and chiropractors?

These different professions within the health care spectrum, both legally entitled to use the title "doctor". As the appellation MD means "Doctor of Medicine", DC means "Doctor of Chiropractic". The role of chiropractic is complementary to other areas of primary health care. Chiropractic is not, for example, a replacement for medical care, but may offer an alternative to medication and surgery in appropriate circumstances.
